  • Both a permit and an accompanying guide are required for this hike. All the canyon and its access roads are on land of the Hopi Reservation, and the tribe have in recent years become concerned at the increasing number of backcountry visitors. Guides can be arranged via the tribal government center in Kykotsmovi Village, or the Hopi Cultural Center near Shungopavi. The easiest and guaranteed way to get a guide is to book in advance by clicking here. This link has a list of authorized Hopi guides/tours.

Blue Canyon, located within the Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona, is a geological wonder renowned for its vibrant hues of blue, purple, and red. Here's an in-depth guide to help you plan your trip and capture stunning photographs of this breathtaking destination:

  • Research and Planning:

    • Blue Canyon is located on tribal land. This remote, uninhabited region spans the border between the Navajo and Hopi reservations, and has become more well known in recent years owing to the incredible array of badlands and eroded rock formations, impressive on both large and small scales; from colorful, sheer-walled ravines with convoluted walls, to tiny hoodoos and innumerable other intricate forms.

  • Getting There:

    • Blue Canyon is located near the town of Tuba City, Arizona, approximately 30 miles southwest. From Tuba City, take Highway 264 east toward Ganado and Chinle. Look for signs indicating Blue Canyon Road (also known as Forest Road 1806) and follow it to the canyon's entrance.

    • Please note that Blue Canyon Road is unpaved and may be rough in certain sections. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, and 4WD may be necessary, especially after heavy rain.

  • Choosing the Right Time:

    • The best time to visit Blue Canyon for photography is during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset when the soft light enhances the canyon's colors and textures. Midday light can be harsh and may wash out the vibrant hues.

  • Photography Gear:

    • Bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a variety of lenses, including wide-angle for expansive landscapes and telephoto for capturing details. A sturdy tripod is essential for long exposures and maintaining stability.

    • Consider bringing filters such as polarizers or graduated neutral density filters to control reflections and balance exposure in bright conditions.

  • Composition and Framing:

    • Blue Canyon offers endless opportunities for creative compositions. Experiment with different angles, perspectives, and focal points to capture the canyon's intricate formations and vibrant colors.

    • Look for leading lines, interesting rock formations, and contrasting colors to add depth and visual interest to your photographs.

  • Exploring the Canyon:

    • Once you arrive at Blue Canyon, take your time to explore the area on foot. The canyon is a maze of narrow passages, towering spires, and hidden alcoves waiting to be discovered.

    • Exercise caution when navigating the uneven terrain, and be mindful of your surroundings to avoid getting lost or injuring yourself.

  • Respecting the Environment:

    • Blue Canyon is a sacred and protected area, so it's essential to tread lightly and respect the land and its inhabitants. Follow Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash, staying on designated trails, and avoiding damage to delicate rock formations.

  • Safety Considerations:

    • Be aware of your surroundings and watch for loose rocks, uneven terrain, and potential hazards while exploring Blue Canyon. Stay hydrated, especially during hot weather, and dress appropriately for changing conditions.

    • Since Blue Canyon is located on tribal land, be respectful of local customs and traditions. Seek permission from tribal authorities if you plan to photograph or explore areas beyond public access points. Also please make sure to ask them if it's okay when bringing a pet with you.
