Read our thoughts about self-drive safaris in Tanzania!
It is possible to do self-drive safaris in Tanzania, however, personally, we would not recommend them.
It isn't our intention to try and put you off, however, there are other countries where self-drive safaris are far easier due to road conditions, navigation and the fact the tourism sector is 'set up' for that type of safari.
If you are happy to pick up a map, not rely on GPS, change tyres and embark on an epic adventure, then it may be an awesome option for you!
Here's what you need to know about self-drive safaris in Tanzania:
Self-driving is permitted in all national parks, however the park fees are usually far more expensive for people who enter on self-drive rather than safari tour companies
You will have to rent a 4x4 truck!
You will need suitable travel insurance that will cover you for a self-drive safari and this is often significantly more expensive!
We would also advise that you would need to opt for the 'full cover' or ensure you have really substantial travel insurance for the car hire.
You will get a flat tyre... maybe even two! You have to be comfortable changing tyres if you opt for a self-drive as the conditions of the roads are poor. We have had one on every safari we have been on!
You will see far more wildlife if you opt for a safari company as the guides are trained to track the animals and also work together to communicate about animal sightings.
A safari guide will also be able to teach you about the wildlife, parks and the cultures in Tanzania. Their knowledge is incredible and getting to know your guide is one of the most rewarding aspects of a safari! They really do make the experience!
Be mindful that there is no GPS signal in the Serengeti Park... and this park is HUGE! We honestly have no idea how our guide knew where he was going. All the roads look the same and there aren't even a huge amount of notable 'landmarks' in the park.
Some parks will be easier to navigate than others.
You will have to arrange the whole itinerary which is a huge undertaking and will require hours of research.
The planning and timings will be difficult as getting from one location to another will inevitably take far longer than planned due to the poor conditions of the road!
There will be a lot of areas where you don't have cell service!
If you do encounter an emergency, bear in mind it may take a while for someone to reach you.
There are strict rules you have to abide by in the national parks and Rangers do survey the areas. You can face hefty fines if found to be breaking any rules!
There is a common misconception on the internet that you will be able to save a lot of money by opting for a self-drive, however through our research this is not always the case!
You will need to learn and research about animal behaviour to ensure that you are keeping, not only the animals safe, but yourself safe. Some animals can be incredibly dangerous when threatened and can cause a lot of damage to your vehicle!
