Anne Hathaway's Cottage is a thatched house located in the idyllic village of Shottery, a mile and a half outside of Stratford-upon-Avon. The building was the childhood home of William Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, where she lived until her marriage to Shakespeare in 1582. Dating back to 1463, the cottage has housed thirteen generations of Hathaways over 368 years. Featuring the 'Hathaway Bed', 'Shakespeare Courting Chair' and the 'Courting Settle', all of which are integral parts of the Hathaway family story, the cottage draws visitors from far and wide who come for its romantic connection to Shakespeare and its picturesque aesthetic. In 1892 it was acquired by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and since then they have opened up the preserved cottage daily for visitor exploration, as well as hosting seasonal activities and special events throughout the year.
