The drive into Milford Sound is an experience in itself and I highly recommend doing so. Around every corner are insane views of the Fiordland landscape, stunning whether it is rain or shine. Homer Tunnel is the engineering wonder of the Milford Road, a 1.2 km tunnel hand-carved out of solid rock which provides vehicle access to Milford Sound. Since it is a one-way tunnel, there are traffic lights at both ends, allowing you to spend some time appreciating the beauty all around you.

Kea, NZ’s cheeky alpine parrot, will often be found near the Homer Tunnel and are playful, cheeky and will try to pull the rubber off your windscreen wipers or door seals.

Remember: Drive safely and be courteous to other road users. You may want to allow vehicles to pass where it is safe to do so. Don’t feed the kea - they are wild animals!

Personal tip: There are several pull-over bays on the western (Milford) side of Homer Tunnel and I think this is the prettiest spot for views. Witness temporary waterfalls down the cliff faces or look down the incredible valley towards Milford Sound.
