Once a hidden gem, New Chums Beach, or Wainuiototo, was named one of the top 20 deserted beaches in the world in 2006. The white sand beach boasts a one-kilometre aesthetic curve and is surrounded by native bush, giving you a feel for what a paradise New Zealand was a couple hundred years ago.

Access Wainuiototo at low tide from Whangapoua beach. You have to cross a tidal stream and clamber across some boulders to access the lookout point and climb over a small hill to reach the beach. The lookout point is a popular photo spot. In summer, the beach is a stunning place to swim and picnic - just remember to allow enough time to cross back at low tide.

Remember: The track can be slippery, particularly after rain, so wear appropriate footwear and be cautious. Stay safe, do not attempt the stream crossing if it is deep and impassable. Remember to take all rubbish out with you and leave no trace - only footprints!

Personal tip: Check the tides and make sure you have a plan! Seriously… We got caught out one time and the stream crossing was up to my middle - I do not recommend!

Pronunciation: Wainuiototo: wao-noo-ee-or-tor-tor

Whangapoua: faa-ngaa-poe-aa
