My Top 4 Spots to Camp with Kangaroos (on the beach)

Is there anything more 'Australia' than setting up camp as the local roos gallivant along the beach? I don't think so šŸ¤šŸ¦˜

Throughout my travels, it's become pretty obvious that these guys love a good stretch of golden sand as much as we do; so here are my top spots to soak up the vibes with a skippy or two.

1. Depot Beach, New South Wales

Depot Beach in Murramarang National Park is where the forest meets the sea. With lush bushland right up to the shore, itā€™s not just stunning ā€“ itā€™s a kangaroo haven. These cheeky guys love to chill in the grassy patches near the campground and often pop down to the beach for a sunrise gallivant.

Why Visit?

  • The combo of dense forest and a pristine beach gives major middle of nowhere vibes (in the best way).

  • The campground has everything you need for a fuss-free stay: loos, hot showers, and fire pits.

  • Kangaroos here are super relaxed, so itā€™s easy to snap that dream photo ā€“ just keep your distance!

My Tip: Head to the beach for sunrise ā€“ not only is it breathtaking, but itā€™s prime time for kangaroo spotting.

2. Diamond Head, New South Wales

Diamond Head in Crowdy Bay National Park is an absolute beaut. Picture this: kangaroos grazing in lush green grass with the ocean as their backdrop. Itā€™s a beach-meets-bush paradise, and the campsite here has a super nice & laid-back energy .

Why Visit?

  • The roos here are locals, always hanging around the grassy picnic spots and wandering onto the beach.

  • Thereā€™s heaps to do, from the Diamond Head Loop Walk (top-tier coastal views!) to fishing and swimming.

  • The campground has picnic tables, bbqs, and cold showers ā€“ luxury camping, Aussie style.

My Tip: Let the kangaroos come to you - they came right up to our campsite, as well as the grassy patch by the beach where we did yoga.

3. Lucky Bay, Western Australia

Lucky Bay is an absolute icon, and itā€™s easy to see why. With sand so white itā€™s basically blinding and water so blue it looks photoshopped, itā€™s already a must-visit. Throw in kangaroos lounging on the beach like theyā€™re on holiday, and youā€™ve got yourself a proper Aussie mood.

Why Visit?

  • The kangaroos here are the real stars ā€“ theyā€™re not shy and love chilling right on the sand.

  • The campground is top-notch with powered sites, BBQs, and hot showers.

  • Thereā€™s heaps to do nearby, like beach-hopping, hiking, and exploring the rest of Cape Le Grand National Park.

My Tip: Get here early for your best chance at seeing the kangaroos on the beach (we're talking sunrise) and drive right on the sand, it's super compact and fine in a 2WD.

4. Pambula Beach, New South Wales

Down on the Sapphire Coast, Pambula Beach is one of my favourite spots to soak up a very old-school, laid-back feel with a side of kangaroo spotting. The roos here roam around, knowing they own the joint - iconic x

Why Visit?

  • Itā€™s family-friendly, with safe swimming spots, shady picnic areas, and beautiful river mouth.

  • Youā€™re spoilt for choice with nearby walking tracks and wildlife reserves.

  • The kangaroos here are used to humans, so youā€™ll get plenty of chances for a close encounter (but remember to look, donā€™t touch!).

My Tip: You'll find the most of the roos down by the Pambula Beach caravan park and nearby grassy reserves.

Other Thoughts

While these four are standouts, there are plenty of other spots around Oz where you can spot kangaroos on the beach. Cape Hillsborough in Queensland is famous for its sunrise roo gatherings, and Pebbly Beach in New South Wales is another classic destination for a beach-and-roo combo. And if youā€™re heading west, keep an eye out on the beaches around Esperance ā€“ you never know when you might spot a roo hopping by.

Whether youā€™re camping under the stars or just popping in for a day trip, these spots will leave you with memories youā€™ll never forget.
