Taking the Tashkent subway was a very different experience! It can still be crowded during rush hours.

And as we traveled by subway in the capital of Uzbekistan, we saw its beautiful subway stations.

The history of the Tashkent Metro is fascinating, especially considering the context in which it was built. After the 1966 earthquake devastated the city, the government decided to rebuild Tashkent with one eye on Uzbek tradition and another on Soviet utopia. This included the addition of a rapid transit system, the first of its kind in Central Asia.

The Tashkent Metro was the first in the region, and although it has been operational for more than four decades, it remained little known in the eyes of international tourism until recently. Until 2018, photos and videos could not be taken because it was regarded as a protective and defensive mechanism. In fact, during the Cold War it was built as an air raid shelter. It was also a strategic military installation.

However, with the political opening of Uzbekistan, the rules were relaxed. We appreciated and documented the artistic beauty of the stations, which are an underground museum in their own right, with decorations that follow a specific theme. Carved columns, gilded chandeliers, and intricate mosaics are just some of the elements that make these stations unique and worth exploring.

La storia della metropolitana di Tashkent è affascinante, soprattutto considerando il contesto in cui è stata costruita. Dopo il terremoto del 1966 che devastò la città, il governo decise di ricostruire Tashkent con un occhio alla tradizione uzbeka e un altro all'utopia sovietica. Abbiamo apprezzato e documentato la bellezza artistica delle stazioni, che sono un museo sotterraneo a sé stante, con decorazioni che seguono un tema specifico. Le colonne scolpite, i lampadari dorati e i mosaici intricati sono solo alcuni degli elementi che rendono queste stazioni uniche nel loro genere e degni di essere esplorate.
