Standing at the end of La Caleta beach on a rocky island in Cádiz, Spain, is the beautiful Castillo de San Sebastián. This historic fortress was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (cultural landmark) back in 1993 and has an intriguing background that stretches way back to the classical tradition before 1457 when a Venetian boat crew recovering from the plague raised a chapel. A fortress was later built by the Spanish Kings following the Muslims rule in 1706 and its main purpose was to defend the northern flank of the city. Ever since then, this majestic castle has been adding a hint of mysterious beauty to the surroundings. The Castillo de San Sebastián has witnessed many battles and interesting events throughout its history while serving as a formidable protector of Cádiz.
