Limmernsee is an amazing destination for adventurers and nature-lovers alike. Located in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland, Limmernsee boasts stunning views of nearby peaks Muttenchopf (2,482 m), Selbsanft (2,950 m) and Kistenstöckli (2,746 m).
The lake has a beautiful turquoise colour and it is incredibly beautiful. On the way you can stop at Muttseehut for some refreshment, or you can book an overnight stay as well.
HIKE DETAILS:
Start: Tierfehd- Kalktrittli cable car station ( in my opinion one of the craziest steepest cable car in Switzerland ) There is no public transportation to take to get here, your option is to take the train to Linthal and walk 7 km to the cable car station or take a taxi. You can also drive and park your car in the parking lot.
Once you arrive at the top station there is 2 ways to start the hike. You either take the long dark tunnel that will take you immediately to the Limmerensee without any elevation or take the hiking trail towards Muttsee hut. It is long and steep and somewhat exposed. I did this option and the views did not disappoint.
The hike is a round trip hike, all together 10,6 km long. The entire journey takes around 4 hours to make but photo and snack breaks it can be longer. Elevation gain is 1090 meters.
The hike itself is incredibly beautiful with huge mountains around and the lake itself is incredibly beautiful with its colour.
The hike is doable only summer, the cable car closes normally at mid October.
