The Saxer Lücke hike in the Appenzell region of Switzerland is a must-do for nature lovers and hikers. Thanks to the Staubern cable car, the once challenging 16 km trail has been made accessible to casual hikers and families. Now, it's just a moderate 3 km hike to reach the breathtaking Saxer Lücke viewpoint. The trail may be rocky and steep at times, so it's best suited for kids aged 8+ with some hiking experience. Pack a picnic or enjoy a hearty Swiss lunch at a mountain restaurant while taking in the stunning views. Don't forget your camera!
HIKE DETAILS:
Start at Staubern cable car. From here you will be hiking 3 km to the famous view point of Saxer Lücke. It is easy but some parts are narrow and exposed so always watch your step.
If you would like some challenge I recommend to hike down an extra 1 km from Saxer Lücke to Fälensee which is an incredible alpine lake. Stop at the Bollenwies restaurant by the lake for some lunch before you hike back up to the cable car.
Round trip with the lake included is 8 km with approx 450 meters of elevation gain.
TIP from Fälensee you can extend your hike towards Sämtisersee then back to Brülisau. On this case you save a return ticket for the cable car.
