Stromness, a charming town in Orkney, Scotland, is known for its picturesque streets lined with stone houses and shops. With a population of around 2,500 residents, it has a rich maritime history dating back to the late 17th century. The town served as an important seaport during times of war and was frequented by ships from the Hudson's Bay Company and whaling fleets. Stromness is also famous for being the birthplace of writer George Mackay Brown and home to the Pier Arts Centre, showcasing British art. Its name comes from the Norse word "Straumnes," referring to the strong tides that flow past the town.
