Sólheimasandur is an expansive area of sand and gravel located along the South Coast of Iceland. It and was created by glacial floodwater rushes from the nearby Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which proved to be a dangerous megaphone for Icelandic eruptions. Despite its dark history, it is still a wonderfully ethereal and beautiful destination, often compared to a lunar landscape or fantastical desert. One of Sólheimasandur's most breathtaking sights is the DC-3 Plane Wreckage, a US Navy plane that had to make an emergency landing due to running out of fuel. Visiting the plane wreckage has become part of many popular tours on the south coast of Iceland. Along with this, there are also great activities to enjoy such as driving through the area, visiting nearby attractions such as Kvernufoss Waterfall and the Skógar Museum, and witnessing the beauty of the glaciers, Highlands, and the South Coast.
