Ouarzazate, nicknamed "The Door of the Desert", is a city located in the Central-South region of Morocco. It has been an important gateway between the Sahara and more populated areas since the 16th century and remains an important stop for traders traveling to or from the desert. With its forbidding terrain and dusty streets, Ouarzazate draws tourists today to its landscape and ever-changing movie-set locations, with films like Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven being filmed here. Tourists are also attracted to the stunning Kasbah Taourirt fortress, originally built by the Sultan T'hami el Glaoui, which looms over the town in all its ancient grandeur. While in town, tourists can also enjoy the numerous Souks that the locals frequent, offering traditional wares in hues of red and orange, as well as explore the surrounding area, with the lush Dra Valley and its contrasting desert atmosphere.
