Planning a trip to Iceland? Make the most of your experience by equipping your smartphone with these 11 must-have apps. As a seasoned traveler myself, I rely on many of these apps regularly, although one of them is highly dependent on the season, so do keep that in mind. Let's dive in!

Driving & Weather Essentials

While the following apps are not ranked in any particular order, the first one I'll mention is undeniably crucial for your Iceland journey.

  • SafeTravel App

Stay informed and prepared with the SafeTravel app from SafeTravel.is. This app provides valuable updates on weather alerts, allowing you to plan accordingly. It also enables you to submit your travel plans, ensuring that authorities are aware of your intended destinations, should you encounter any issues or lose connectivity. Today, I checked the app and noticed warnings about dangerous waves at Reynisfjara beach and avalanche alerts in certain parts of the country. SafeTravel also employs a color-coded system to indicate road conditions, ranging from green (easily passable) to red (closed). By selecting your desired travel area, you can instantly view the corresponding road conditions on a convenient map. Checking SafeTravel before setting off will help you assess the road conditions for your intended routes.

  • Google Maps

Google Maps is a reliable navigation companion in Iceland, given its user-friendly interface and the country's relatively easy-to-navigate terrain. If you won't have access to the internet during your stay (by not renting a Wi-Fi hotspot or activating an international internet plan from your service provider), you can download the entire map of Iceland on Google Maps, directly onto your phone. Personally, I prefer having internet access, as it allows me to utilize other helpful apps while on the road. However, the choice is yours.

  • Vedur or yr.no

When traveling in Iceland, weather conditions are always a crucial factor to consider. Although I have the Vedur app, it can be a bit finicky and not particularly user-friendly. Instead, I recommend checking out yr.no, an app from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. I've found it to be quite accurate, and it's become one of my go-to weather apps. While both apps serve the purpose, yr.no has proven to be more reliable in my experience. You can even consider using the Windy app, although I haven't personally used it yet.

  • 112 App

In Iceland, the emergency number is 112. The 112 Iceland app allows you to contact emergency services without making a call. Its clear and simple interface helps you convey your situation through text messages to emergency operators. Once the app establishes contact, it automatically sends your location, along with your stored personal information and a description of the situation, to the emergency center. This enables a faster response to your call for help.

The app was originally designed for hearing-impaired individuals who use sign language (referred to as "döff people" in Icelandic), but it has proven useful for anyone who may struggle with making a phone call or describing their situation verbally. Should you find yourself in a situation where you need emergency services but can't speak or make a call, this app can be a lifeline if you have internet access.

Immerse Yourself in Icelandic Music

  • Spotify

No trip to Iceland is complete without immersing yourself in the local music scene. In collaboration with Go Car Rental, I've curated an epic playlist featuring various Icelandic artists for you to enjoy during your travels. While you can listen to these artists anywhere, you'll find that their music adds a unique touch to the Icelandic landscape as you explore. Our playlist is titled "Epic Iceland Road Trip with All Things Iceland & GO."

You’ll find a mix of famous international Icelandic artists, ones that are famous in the country, as well as some up-and-coming people. If you have any trouble finding the playlist, click here for the link.

Happy Hours in Reykjavik

When it comes to enjoying the vibrant nightlife of Reykjavik without breaking the bank, there's an app you shouldn't miss.

  • Barhopp

To help you navigate through the expensive alcohol scene in Iceland, I highly recommend the Barhopp app. This app is your ultimate guide to finding the best happy hours in Reykjavik. It not only showcases various happy hour deals but also keeps you informed about events like DJ performances and dance parties happening at different venues. As a replacement for the outdated Appy Hour app, Barhopp fills the gap by providing up-to-date information on the numerous happy hours taking place throughout the week.

It's an excellent tool for trying delicious cocktails and locally brewed beers at different locations. Consider embarking on your own bar crawl adventure, exploring places like Brew Dog, Einstök bar, and Skúli Bar. Trust me, it's a blast!

The Northern Lights

If you're visiting Iceland during winter, witnessing the enchanting Northern Lights should be at the top of your bucket list. For this unique natural phenomenon, there's an app specifically designed to help you track and maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights.

  • My Aurora Forecast (only useful during winter)

During the long, dark nights of winter, Iceland offers a prime opportunity to witness the mesmerizing Northern Lights. My Aurora Forecast is the go-to app for keeping track of aurora activity and planning your Northern Lights adventure. It provides real-time information about the aurora forecast, ensuring you don't miss the awe-inspiring displays in the Icelandic sky. For more in-depth tips on how and where to see the Northern Lights in Iceland, be sure to check out my previous episode "How and Where to See the Northern Lights in Iceland."

Hiking Trails

Iceland's breathtaking landscapes and stunning hiking trails make it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're a novice hiker or a seasoned adventurer, an app can help you discover the best trails and plan your hiking excursions.

  • All Trails

For comprehensive information on hiking trails in Iceland, I highly recommend using the All Trails app. It offers a wide range of trail options, from leisurely walking tours in Reykjavik to challenging hikes in remote areas of the country. With All Trails, you'll find detailed trail descriptions, directions, a navigation tool, trail length, elevation gain, route types (e.g., loops or one-way), and difficulty levels (easy, moderate, or challenging).

Additionally, the app provides reviews and user-submitted photos, giving you a glimpse of what to expect on each trail. While the app is free to use, upgrading to the premium version unlocks additional features. Consider upgrading for an even more seamless hiking experience in Iceland.

Alternative Transportation Options

Whether you're renting a car or looking to explore alternative modes of transportation in Reykjavik, these two apps have got you covered.

  • Hopp Scooter

For a fun and convenient way to get around the city, try Hopp Scooter. These electric scooters are perfect for zipping around Reykjavik. The app is easy to use, allowing you to locate and unlock scooters with just a few taps. However, it's important to note that drinking and scootering is strongly discouraged due to safety concerns. Recent accidents involving scooters have resulted in hospital visits, so it's best to enjoy these scooters responsibly. Don't forget to wear a helmet, especially since these scooters can reach high speeds.

  • Strætó Bus App (Klappið)

If you prefer public transportation for exploring Reykjavik, the Strætó bus app, Klappið, is your go-to resource. Although there were some initial issues reported after its launch, the app has undergone updates and improvements. Klappið provides real-time bus schedules, routes, and information to help you navigate the city with ease. It's an ideal option for getting around Reykjavik using the extensive public bus network. Rest assured, the app will help you reach your desired destinations conveniently and efficiently.

Icelandic to English Translations

While many Icelanders speak English fluently, you may encounter Icelandic signs or texts that leave you puzzled. Luckily, there's an app that can assist you with translations.

  • Google Translate

When faced with Icelandic language challenges, Google Translate comes to the rescue. This app features an incredible camera function that scans and translates text in real time, right on your screen. While translations may not always be 100% accurate, Google Translate generally does a decent job of conveying the meaning. It's an invaluable tool for bridging the language barrier during your Icelandic adventures.

These 11 apps are your ultimate travel companions for exploring Iceland. From weather updates and navigation assistance to local music playlists and translation aids, they'll enhance every aspect of your journey. Download them before your trip and get ready for an unforgettable Icelandic experience!
