Are you planning a trip to Iceland in March?

While colder weather and snow might deter some travelers, March is a GREAT month to visit Iceland. It's still considered winter in Iceland, however the days are pretty long. With over 10 hours of daylight each day, it's one of the best months for a winter adventure in Iceland.

I’ll provide you with all the information you need to know about visiting Iceland in March, including what to expect in terms of weather, what to pack, and some of the top things to do during your visit.

Weather in Iceland in March

The average high temperature during this month ranges from about 28 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit (-2 - 3 degrees Celsius) The wind chills can make feel even colder than that! As you can see, it can be quite cold in Iceland in March, so it's important to dress accordingly. Layering is key, as is bringing warm, waterproof clothing and good quality boots and micro spikes for any icy walkways. It's also a good idea to bring a windproof jacket, as Iceland can be very windy.

It's important to have flexible plans when you travel in Iceland during the wintertime due to the unpredictable weather and road conditions. Normal weather in Iceland during March is truly unpredictable, truly we never know. Sometimes there's snow, sometimes there's not. Sometimes it snows, sometimes it rains. I've lived in Iceland for almost 5 years and every single March as been so different, it just don't make sense.

March Activities in Iceland

Despite the colder weather, there are still plenty of things to do in Iceland in January.

Northern Lights

One of the biggest attractions is the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), which are often visible during this time of year. Take a Northern Lights Tour to some of the best viewing spots, or you can try to see them on your own by driving out of the city and away from light pollution. Just be sure to check the forecast before you go, as the Northern Lights are more likely to be visible on clear nights. Check out my Northern Lights Tips to help you find them in Iceland.

Ice Caves

A MUST do activity in January is to explore Ice Caves. A guide is REQUIRED to visit Ice Caves and you cannot visit then on your own. My favorite Ice Cave tours are with Katlatrack Ice Cave and (or) the Ice Cave Discovery tour with Local Guide - Glacier Hikes. I cannot recommend these tours enough, it’s the most magical experience you can have in Iceland! Use code KYANASUE10 for a discount on either of these tours!

Glacier Hiking

One of the most unique adventures in Iceland is hiking on a glacier, there is one pretty close to Reykjavik called Solheimajokull. You can take an easy glacier hiking (more walking less hiking) or ice climbing adventure tour with Arctic Adventures. This is truly an unforgettable experience. The ice is SO BLUE this time of year. Use code KYANA10 for a discount on either of these tours. They even offer a pick up from Reykjavik, in case you didn't rent a car.

Super Jeep Tour

Lots of roads in Iceland are closed during March due to snow and ice (none of the main ones though). But Super Jeeps, which are basically just modified SUVs or sprinter vans have massive tires to drive through the snow and reach untouchable places. Places that cars could NEVER reach. Midgard Adventures offers insane day trips to places like Thorsmork and show you around hidden canyons. It is a literal fairy tale land here and they almost always see Arctic Foxes!! This is the perfect adventure for the whole family, especially because you get to have a break from driving. This tour is so underrated, do yourself a favor and book it! Use code KYANASUE10 for 10% off this tour.

Hot Springs

If you're looking to relax, you might consider visiting one of Iceland's many geothermal pools and spas. I recommend a new one called Hvammsvik that is right near Reykjavik. These pools and spas are a great way to warm up after a cold day of sightseeing.

Road Trip

The best thing you can do for yourself is to rent a car from Blue Car Rental right from the airport and take a road trip along the south coast, up to Snaefellsnes, and if you have time, around the full Ring Road. The waterfalls and scenery are beautifully frozen this time of year and most things in Iceland are super accessible. My favorites are Seljandsfoss and Skogafoss but you can find even more waterfalls and stops on my Iceland Map. I think it’s the most beautiful time to take a roadtrip in Iceland. In order to make the most of your time, renting a car and staying in a few places that way you can reach epic places like the Glacier Lagoon without driving for 12 hours a day.

Snorkeling

For the more adventurous spirits, you might want to try Snorkeling in Silfra. Get a drysuit on and float between 2 tectonic plates! It's crazy that you can snorkel in Iceland, even during the coldest months! You can use code KYANA10 for a discount with Arctic Adventures.

Take a Food Tour

If you are hanging around Reykjavik then the Reykjavik Food Tour is right up your alley! You’ll go on a small group tour with a local guide and try amazing authentic Iceland cuisines. Please just trust me on this one, you’re going to absolutely love it! You can use code KYANASUE10 for a 10% discount.

Can't Drive? Take a Guided Multi-Day Tour with Arctic Adventures instead of staying in Reykjavik. Iceland is too amazing of a country to stay in the small city the whole time.

Overall, visiting Iceland in March will be a unique and memorable experience. The colder weather means that you'll have to be prepared and dress warmly, but the opportunity to see the Northern Lights and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities will make it well worth it.
