My recommendations for what to bring to Greenland in the winter season.
You probably know the expression “there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing,” right?
This definitely holds true in Greenland, where it is essential for your travel experience to be able to enjoy and embrace Greenland’s Arctic climate, and that depends on having the right clothing.
Therefore, you should always bring:
Good hiking shoes or boots
Wind- and waterproof layers
A hat and gloves
A set of wool base layers
Layering works well both in summer and winter in Greenland.
Inner layer: I prefer a baselayer made of wool or moisture-wicking material.
Mid layer: A cotton shirt, training top, or a vest.
Outer layer: In Greenland, many people wear Arc’teryx jackets, and I myself became completely dependent on my Arc’teryx fiber jacket during the summer season. I also wore my Fjällräven hiking pants daily, which were wind- and water-resistant outer layers.
Hat, gloves, and neck gaiter – these are needed both in summer and winter.
Here’s a general packing list for Greenland:
Winter season:
A warm winter jacket
Wind- and waterproof jacket
Wool or fleece sweater
Hiking socks and wool socks
Boots
Backpack for day trips in the mountains or boat trips
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Water bottle (and there’s plenty of opportunity to get the freshest cold water in the mountains)
Rental of sled clothing for dog sledding tours
Even on a shorter dog sledding tour lasting an hour, it can get cold when sitting on the sled. In most places, it is possible to rent seal skin clothing and warm boots for the sledding tour. If you don't have particularly warm clothing yourself, I recommend that you rent sledding equipment. It is also an experience in itself to try the "original" sled equipment.
