Understanding the Swiss Hiking Difficulty Scale: T1 to T6
To help hikers assess trail difficulty and prepare accordingly, the Swiss Alpine Club developed the hiking difficulty scale, which categorizes trails from T1 to T6. This scale is essential for safety, as it helps outdoor enthusiasts choose routes that match their skill levels and ensure they are properly equipped for the journey.
Note:
The vast majority of the locations within the guide are T3 and below.
T1 (Hiking)
Well-marked paths on even terrain.
No special footwear required.
Minimal risk, suitable for beginners and families.
T2 (Mountain Hiking)
Narrower trails, sometimes steep with slight exposure.
Hiking boots recommended.
Basic sure-footedness required.
T3 (Challenging Mountain Hiking)
Steeper, less defined trails, may include exposed sections.
Good hiking boots and solid sure-footedness essential.
Basic navigation skills beneficial.
T4 (Alpine Hiking)
Trails are often not marked, with exposed and steep passages.
Requires experience with alpine terrain.
Good orientation skills, a head for heights, and technical gear may be necessary.
T5 (Demanding Alpine Hiking)
Very steep, exposed routes often require the use of hands.
Advanced alpine experience needed.
Climbing equipment might be necessary.
T6 (Difficult Alpine Hiking)
Extremely challenging routes with unmarked paths.
Requires expert navigation, climbing skills, and full alpine gear.
