Porto Santo, the “Golden Island” of the Madeira archipelago, offers a unique and contrasting escape from the rugged, green landscapes of its larger neighbor. Known for its 9-kilometer stretch of soft, golden sands and tranquil atmosphere, Porto Santo is a paradise for those seeking relaxation, adventure, or a blend of both.

A Glimpse into History

Discovered in 1418 by Portuguese explorers João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, Porto Santo holds the distinction of being the first island of the Madeira archipelago to be found during Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Its name, meaning “Holy Port,” reflects the gratitude of its discoverers, who were saved from a storm upon reaching its shores. Today, Porto Santo remains a testament to Portugal’s seafaring legacy, offering a connection to the past through its natural beauty and historical landmarks.

Why Visit Porto Santo?

Porto Santo is a destination that complements a trip to Madeira perfectly, adding diversity and a sense of discovery to your itinerary. While Madeira is celebrated for its lush forests, dramatic cliffs, and mountainous terrain, Porto Santo feels like an entirely different world—more akin to a quiet island retreat closer to Africa. The golden beaches, combined with the island’s serene ambiance, create an experience that is both exotic and uniquely European.

If your time in Madeira is limited to a week, it’s worth focusing on exploring the main island. However, if you have 10 or more days to spare, a visit to Porto Santo is highly recommended. Its pristine beaches offer a stark contrast to Madeira’s rocky coastline, providing a rare opportunity to relax on endless sands while basking in the island’s sunny and dry climate, which is typically warmer and less humid than Madeira’s.

When to Visit?

Porto Santo’s mild and sunny weather makes it a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is between May and October, when the warm temperatures and calm seas are ideal for beach days and outdoor activities. Unlike Madeira, which often experiences cooler and wetter conditions in the winter, Porto Santo boasts a more stable and drier climate, perfect for uninterrupted relaxation.

Wondering about the temperatures? They typically range between 20°C (68°F) and 24°C (75°F), depending on the season. The coolest and rainiest months are January, February and March, while July, August and September bring the warmest weather with minimal rain.

In contrast to Madeira’s rugged terrain, Porto Santo is mostly flat, with its highest peak rising just over 500 meters. This unique geography prevents clouds from lingering, resulting in an impressive 300 days of sunshine each year. It’s no wonder that locals from Madeira often choose Porto Santo for their holidays!

How to Get to Porto Santo

Getting to Porto Santo is an adventure in itself, with two main transportation options available. Whether you prefer the scenic journey by sea or the speed of air travel, reaching the “Golden Island” is simple and enjoyable.

1. By Ferry

The Lobo Marinho ferry, operated by Porto Santo Line, provides a daily connection between Madeira and Porto Santo. This large and comfortable ferry departs from Funchal Harbor and docks at Porto Santo Harbor after a scenic 2-hour and 30-minute journey. The ferry is a favorite option for travelers, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and plenty of onboard amenities.

Onboard Facilities:

• Comfortable seating and air-conditioned cabins.

• Dining options, including snacks and meals.

• A play area for children.

• Free Wi-Fi in certain areas.

Schedules and Booking Tips:

• Ferries run daily, with an early morning departure from Funchal and a return trip in the evening.

• During peak seasons (summer and holidays), it is highly recommended to book your tickets in advance.

• Tickets can be purchased online at portosantoline.pt or at ticket offices in Funchal.

Important Note:

The ferry undergoes its annual Maintenance Month in January, during which no sailings take place. Travelers planning a trip during this period should opt for air travel or plan around the maintenance schedule.

2. By Plane

For those who value speed, a 20-minute flight from Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport to Porto Santo Airport is the fastest way to reach the island. Operated by regional airlines, flights are frequent and convenient.

Flight Details:

• The flight provides stunning aerial views of both islands and the Atlantic.

• Flights operate year-round, with additional frequency during peak travel seasons.

• Booking in advance ensures the best availability and prices.

Airport Transfer Options:

• Porto Santo Airport is located just 2 kilometers from the town center, making it easy to reach your accommodation by taxi or shuttle.

Which Option is Best for You?

Choose the Ferry if:

• You enjoy scenic sea journeys and onboard amenities.

• You’re traveling with a car, as the ferry accommodates vehicles.

• You’re looking for a more budget-friendly option.

Choose the Plane if:

• You prefer speed and convenience.

• You’re traveling during the ferry’s Maintenance Month in January.

• You want a quick weekend getaway to Porto Santo.

Top Activities in Porto Santo

While the beach is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Porto Santo, there’s much more to explore and experience:

1. Beach Bliss:

Porto Santo’s Praia Dourada is not only the island’s main attraction but also recognized as one of the best beaches in Europe. Stretching 9 kilometers, its golden sands and clear, shallow waters make it perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and long, peaceful walks. The sand is even said to have therapeutic properties, making a visit to this beach both relaxing and rejuvenating.

2. Hiking:

For those who love nature, Porto Santo offers three official hiking trails that showcase the island’s unique landscape, starkly different from Madeira’s lush greenery:

1. PS PR1 Vereda Pico Branco and Terra Chã: This trail leads hikers to Pico Branco, one of the highest points on the island, offering panoramic views and unique flora.

2. PS PR2 Vereda do Pico Castelo: This path ascends to Pico do Castelo, a historically significant site with a small fort and breathtaking vistas.

3. PS PR 3 - Levada do Pico do Castelo: This trail takes you to Fonte da Areia, known for its natural spring and intriguing sandstone formations.

These trails provide diverse experiences, showcasing the island’s unique landscapes and natural beauty. For the most current information on trail conditions and statuses, please refer to the official IFCN website: Percursos Pedestres Classificados

3. Adventure Tours:

Jeep and Buggy Tours: Explore hidden corners of the island, from volcanic rock formations to secluded beaches.

Water Sports: Activities like windsurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and diving are popular, with several local operators offering lessons and rentals.

Yachting and Boat Trips: Discover the island from the sea, with options ranging from leisurely cruises to fishing charters.

4. Historical Landmarks:

Casa de Cristóvão Colombo (House of Christopher Columbus): A small museum dedicated to the famed explorer, who once lived on the island.

Quinta das Palmeiras: A charming mini botanical garden and aviary.

5. Natural Wonders:

The island’s rugged cliffs, volcanic formations, and desert-like terrain create a unique and striking landscape that feels more African than European—a stark contrast to Madeira’s lush environment.

Where to Stay

For a small island, Porto Santo offers some excellent accommodations. Two standout options are:

1. Hotel Porto Santo & Spa: Located right on the beach, this hotel combines comfort with a touch of luxury, offering direct access to Praia Dourada and a relaxing spa.

2. Hotel Porto Santo & Spa: A family-friendly resort with all-inclusive packages, excellent facilities, and easy access to the beach.

Both options provide the perfect base to unwind and explore the island.

Transportation on Porto Santo: Getting Around the Island

Porto Santo offers several convenient options for getting around, each tailored to different budgets and travel styles. While bringing your own car on the ferry is an option, it’s not the most economical choice, as the one-way transport fee for a car is around 150 euros. Renting a car on the island is far more budget-friendly and hassle-free. I rented mine from Five Rent-a-Car, and the experience was excellent. Prices for car rentals start at 50 euros per day, though you should factor in possible deposits or insurance fees.

If you’re traveling light, a scooter is a fantastic and budget-friendly option to explore all corners of the island. Renting a 125-cc scooter costs about 30 euros per day and gives you the freedom to feel the breeze while navigating scenic roads. For those seeking an off-road adventure, quad bikes are a great choice, starting at 100 euros per day, offering a comfortable way to tackle rougher terrain.

All these options—scooters, quad bikes, and even bicycles—are available at Auto Acessórios Colombo – ACC, making it a one-stop shop for your transportation needs. Whether you prefer cycling at your own pace (12 euros per day for a bicycle) or zipping around effortlessly on an electric bike (8 euros per hour), ACC provides everything you need to explore the island with ease.

For guided adventures, 4x4 tours organized by Brave Landers are a great choice. Prices start at 40 euros for a four-hour tour, and the guides provide fascinating insights into Porto Santo’s history and landscapes.

While taxis are readily available in Vila Baleira, they’re not the most budget-friendly option, especially for longer trips. Using a rental car, scooter, or bike is a far more cost-effective and enjoyable way to experience the island.
