Sodankylän vanha kirkko is one of Finland's oldest wooden churches, built in 1689 by the Royal Majesty.

Its style is a combination of medieval church architecture and traditional timber construction with some very interesting features such as the barrel vault ceiling, decorations with shapes reminiscent of the Middle Ages, and sturdy supporting arches. The interior of the church is unvarnished and unpainted, and the floor hides many valuable graves from past centuries. In the old days, for example, priests and other dignitaries could be buried under the church floor. You can even see bones between the floorboards.

This old church is open to the public in summer.
