The huge Foroglio waterfall near Locarno is easy to reach, with the main viewpoint right next to the parking and bus stop.
You can do a short stroll to the river flowing from the falls, a great place for pics with the falls in the background.
We also suggest the very short trail to the base of the falls, a steep 10 mins on uneven terrain but well worth the effort. This trail starts by walking through the village and turning left when you reach the trail signs. You'll get wet as you reach the viewpoint. Some people scramble down to get quite close to the water, but be very careful as the path is very muddy and slippery.
If you like to hike, we definitely recommend doing the longer hike to the top of the falls. After a tough climb, you spill into a magical high alpine valley, where you can walk along the river that feeds the falls.
The falls live in a tiny village with classic stone “rustico” buildings, just waiting for you to snap their picture. There is one a small cafe serving traditional dishes like polenta and stew, with a view of the falls. Reservations recommended. Otherwise, bring a picnic and settle in the shade while you enjoy the show.
