The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is a 5,900 km² nature reserve in Ecuador located on the foothills of the Andes and close to the Amazon. This incredibly rich area is home to abundant wildlife like lowland tapirs, deer, cats, capibaras, two species of dolphins, manatees, two otter species, and 10 species of monkeys. In addition, there are more than 580 registered bird species, 350 fish species, two species of cayman, and various reptiles and bats. The area also encompasses nine major ecosystems including well-drained forests, flooded forests, sediment-rich rivers, “black water” rivers, permanent lakes, and semi-permanent lakes. Here visitors can enjoy tropical rainforests filled with diverse plants and animals along with interesting ethnology.
