Sanjūsangendō, also known as the Temple of thirty-three bays, is a Buddhist temple located in Kyoto, Japan. Founded in 1164 by Taira no Kiyomori for Emperor Go-Shirakawa, this temple is famous for its incredibly long main hall housing 1001 standing Thousand-armed Kannon statues. The main deity, a Thousand Armed Kannon statue created by Tankei, is a National Treasure of Japan. Additionally, the temple features 28 guardian deities with origins in Hinduism, adding a unique cultural and spiritual dimension to the site. With its rich history and impressive collection of sculptures, Sanjūsangendō is a must-visit destination for those exploring Kyoto's cultural heritage.
