Sombrio Beach is the longest stretch of shoreline along the Juan de Fuca coast on Vancouver Island. It’s a favorite spot for surfers. The beach is predominantly made up of pebbles, with colors ranging from dark gray to light purple.
One of the highlights of Sombrio Beach is the Hidden Waterfall, located in a moss-covered canyon at the far eastern end of the beach. It is possible to camp on the beach - $10/per person/per night. Pay online or at the trailhead in cash.
The Sombrio Beach parking lot is accessed via an unpaved, downhill 1.7km long road from Highway 14. It is well used but can be a little bumpy, depending on recent maintenance. The easy trail to the beach is 1km return.
Be sure to check out the suspension bridge when returning to the parking lot (turn left at the junction around the halfway point)
