Yellowhead Pass National Historic Site marks the importance of this valley corridor area for easy travel for Indigenous peoples, explorers and fur trappers. A railway was also built here in the early 1900s, with the Yellowhead Highway opening in 1970.
There is a lovely picnic area next to Portal Lake, with some interpretive signage to read. Since this is also the BC/Alberta border line, there is a Welcome to BC sign to pose next to as well. It's in much better shape than the one further south on Highway 1!
If you're curious, the name of the pass and highway come from the nickname given to Pierre Bostonais, a fair-headed Iroquois Metis man who was trading, trapping and exploring this area in the early 1800s.
