Get ready to soak in the sights aboard the Brienz Rothorn bahn, a 128-year-old steam train as it chugs through the breathtaking Swiss mountains!

On your way up, you will pass through lush forests and meadows before slowly climbing up to the Rothorn peak. But it gets EVEN BETTER once you reach the top: Simply imagine the incredible beauty of a blue-crystal lake...surrounded by majestic mountains peaks, dotted with small houses with grazing cows, it's like a milk-carton advertisement in real life!

After marvelling at the views, you can dine at the mountain restaurant serving snacks and coffee.

How to get to the Brienz Rothorn Bahn:

The Brienz Rothorn Bahn is located just opposite the Brienz train station.

Ticket prices:

48 CHF with Half-Fare card or Swiss Travel Pass

FREE with Berner Oberland Pass

(Note: Admittedly, this train experience is quite expensive, so it is definitely worth it to consider getting the BO to get it for free if you want to do this activity)

Tips:

  • I strongly advise you to pre-book your ticket here and reserve your seat online, as it gets very popular during summer, especially on good weather days and if you come impromptu you might not even get a spot.

  • The altitude gets quite high (2,350m)so pack along an extra jacket in case it gets chilly

  • Take note that the train ride in each direction takes about an hour so do factor in sufficient time when planning your day

  • NOTE: This is a traditionalold-school steam engine train. The train burns coal which heats the water to create steam and there will be smoke at some parts of the journey. Not recommended if you have asthma, pregnant or are sensitive to smoke.

UPDATE: The Brienz Rothorn bahn is closed for the current season due to the massive damage caused by the storm on August 12, 2024.
