One of the best daytrips to do from Lucerne and Zurich is the Stoos Ridge hike! During this hike, you will get the chance to take the Stoosbahnen, the world's steepest funicular railway, whisking visitors up to the charming car-free village of Stoos in the Swiss Alps.

Please note that although this is a well built trail, there are some very steep slopes on the side of the trail without railings and could potentially be dangerous. So if you are going with young kids, please make sure you supervise your children at all time. This trail will be more suitable for intermediate hikers with steady footing. You will also be taking two chairlifts, so you will be suspended in mid-air, take note if you have fear of heights.

Transport Directions:

From Zurich or Lucerne, take the train to Schwyz, Bahnhof (50 mins to 1 hour) Then transfer by bus #1 to Schwyz, Stoosbahn, which will drop you off directly at the funicular station.

Prices:

If you are planning to do the ridge hike, you need to get the “Stoos Peak Experience Ticket” , which includes return trip on the funicular to the Stoos village and the two chair lifts necessary for the hike.

In summer 2024, this ticket costs CHF 56 for adult (full-fare), 42 CHF with Half-fare card and 32 CHF with Swiss Travel Pass. iT IS CHF 20 for children 6-15, under age 6 free.

Hiking Directions:

  • Starting Point - Stoos: Begin at the village of Stoos, which is accessible via a funicular railway from Schwyz.

  • Initial Ascent: From Stoos, take the chairlift to Klingenstock. This will give you a head start on the elevation gain.

  • Ridge Trail: Follow the marked trail from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock. The trail is a well-maintained ridge walk offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and lakes.

Trail Highlights:

  • The hike is about 4 kilometers long.

  • Expect narrow paths and some steep sections, so caution is necessary.

  • Enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding peaks, including the Mythen and the Rigi mountains.

Fronalpstock:

Upon reaching Fronalpstock, you can take in the magnificent 360-degree views from the summit. There is also a playground and restaurant where you can have lunch and chill.

Descent Options

  • Return to Stoos by the same ridge trail if you prefer to hike back.

  • Alternatively, take the chairlift down from Fronalpstock back to Stoos for a more relaxed descent.
