A great daytrip option when in Ticino is to visit Bellinzona, a historic Swiss Old town and also the capital of Ticino canton. Known for the majestic Bellinzona Castles, Bellinzona sits at the foot of the Alps and is surrounded by stunning mountain ranges. With a cool coat of arms featuring a serpent, Bellinzona has a rich history dating back to Roman times and has seen its fair share of battles between emperors, popes, and local rulers.

Today, it's a charming town with a mix of ancient and modern vibes, making it a must-visit spot in Switzerland.

From Lugano, Bellinzona is a mere 15 minutes away by train.

If you come on a Wednesday or a Saturday, do not miss the local farmer's market at the Old Town. It is a riot of colours and noisy market banter with the best regional vegetable and fruit products of the season; home-made specialities prepared with ancient recipes and delicious cheese from the valleys are sold by the stalls, together with the lovely local bread.
