If you're thinking of going to Switzerland and want to explore beautiful mountain villages, you simply can't miss out on Mürren to your itinerary. Whether you go in summer, winter, or the quieter times in between, you'll enjoy it. It's one of the lovely, peaceful villages that adds to Switzerland's charm.
Mürren consists of just a few streets adorned with charming houses. In winter, it's covered in snow, while in summer, colorful flowers decorate the scene. With the backdrop of majestic mountains, Mürren is like a perfect postcard capturing the essence of Switzerland!
Mürren, although car-free, is very accessible. You can reach it in approximately 30 minutes from Lauterbrunnen, 1 hour from Interlaken, and 2 hours from Bern.
How to get to Mürren:
Start your journey by taking a train to Lauterbrunnen, a small village below Mürren, just a 20-minute ride from Interlaken Ost. Next, hop on a gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp, a train station at 1500 meters above sea level. Look for the sign "Seilbahn Grütschalp / Mürren." The gondola runs several times an hour, taking only 4 minutes to reach Grütschalp.
From Grütschalp, board a train to Mürren BLM station, enjoying a scenic and breathtaking 15-minute ride. Stay on the train until you reach Mürren, ignoring any stops along the way.
Upon arrival at Mürren train station, take a delightful stroll for a couple of minutes to reach the main street, where you'll find numerous restaurants and hotels. Don't worry—the walk is incredibly scenic and enjoyable!
Tip: If you have the Swiss Travel Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass The gondola ride from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and the train ride from Grütschalp to Mürren are both covered.
The main thing to do in Mürren is simply to stroll around the village. It's a slow and relaxing way to appreciate the gorgeous alpine scenery.
Budget tip: Go get some snacks from the local Coop store and find somewhere to sit outside for a picnic! 🧺
Bonus activity:
If you have time to spare, and are visiting during the summer/autumn months, consider doing a relatively easy 1 hour hike from Mürren down to Gimmelwald. It is downhill all the way, and suitable for all fitness levels. As you walk down, you will see the Lauterbrunnen Valley down below and the snow cap peaks of the Alps out in the distance, and no matter which direction you turn, the sceneries are just dropdead gorgeous. T You can check this blogpost here for further details of the hike.
