If you're looking for an unforgettable hiking experience in Switzerland, Seealpsee should be at the top of your list. Nestled in the picturesque Appenzell Alps, this serene lake offers stunning views and a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. I recommend doing this as a daytrip from Zurich and combining it with Appenzell.
Transport Directions (From Zurich)
By Train: Start your journey from Zurich HB. Take a direct train to Gossau SG, which typically takes about 1 hour. From Gossau SG, transfer to a local train heading towards Appenzell. Once in Appenzell, hop on the narrow-gauge train to Wasserauen, the starting point of your hike. The entire train journey takes approximately 2 hours.
By Car: If you prefer driving, head out from Zurich towards Gossau via the A1 highway. From Gossau, follow signs to Appenzell and then to Wasserauen. The drive usually takes around 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.
Hiking directions
From Wasserauen, the trail to Seealpsee is well-marked and easy to follow. Here are the key details:
Trailhead: Wasserauen Station
Distance: Approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles)
Elevation Gain: 230 meters (750 feet)
Duration: Around 1 hour each way, depending on your pace
The path is a mix of gravel and paved sections. At the very beginning, there will be a very steep incline, and that is the most tiring part of the hike. You do need a certain level of fitness for this!
Along the way, you'll be treated to beautiful alpine scenery, with lush meadows and impressive mountain views.
Things to Do at Seealpsee
Enjoy the Scenic Views: Upon reaching Seealpsee, take a moment to soak in the stunning panorama. The emerald-green waters, surrounded by towering peaks, make for a picture-perfect setting.
Picnic by the Lake: Pack a picnic and find a cozy spot by the lake. There are several picnic areas where you can relax and enjoy your meal while taking in the tranquil surroundings.
Swimming and Boating: On warm days, take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of Seealpsee. You can also rent a rowboat for a leisurely paddle around the lake!
Explore the Surrounding Trails: If you're up for more hiking, you can continue on from Seealpsee to other beautiful spots in the region, including Ebenalp and the Wildkirchli caves.
Visit the Mountain Huts: There are a couple of charming mountain huts near the lake, such as Berggasthaus Forelle and Berggasthaus Seealpsee, where you can enjoy traditional Swiss dishes and refreshments.
