If you are planning to catch the alpine descent in Western Switzerland, Charmey is the BEST place to do so in the region!
After spending over four months grazing in the alpine pastures, the cows begin their descent to the plains (also called the Désalpes). There is a colourful procession and the cows and sheeps are welcome back to the town, wearing beautiful floral headdresses to highlight the occasion.
Activities:
Market with local produce and crafts from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Farm animals and horse rides for children
Folk music
Evening concert in the canteen until midnight
Various stands offering regional specialties
This is Charmey's most celebrated event of the year, and the alpine descent is such a unique Swiss cultural activity during autumn.
This celebration is held every fourth Saturday in September and in 2024, the date falls on 28 September, so hopefully your trip will coincide with this date!
Transport directions:
By Train:
Take a train from Lausanne to Bulle
At Bulle, transfer to a bus 260 heading towards Charmey (check schedules for exact bus routes and timings).
The bus will take you directly to Charmey.
It's best to check the event website nearing the alpine descent itself as they will have more specific transport details.
Tip: If you missed the alpine descent in Charmey, the other alternative in Swiss Romande region will be the one at St Cergue, also happening on 28 Sepember. Visit here.
