If you are in Ticino, Gandria is one place you simply HAVE to visit. This charming village is nestled at the foot of Monte Brè on Lake Lugano, and exudes a nostalgic vibe with its car-free streets, steep staircases, and preserved historic buildings.
What to do when in Gandria:
The top activity to do when in Gandria is to hike the Olive Grove Trail. This is a an easy, relaxing 4-5km walk that’s great for families with kids, and is suitable as well for untrained hikers. It will take you about 45 minutes from Gandria to Castagnola, and from there you can take the local bus 12 back to Lugano Centrale.
The trail is quietly beautiful with all kinds of lush greenery and olive trees, while guiding you among some of the most beautiful lake views of Lugano. Try to do the trail before noon or in the late evening instead so you do not suffer under the merciless heat especially during summer.
It's also nice to come to Gandria and have lunch at some of the grottos here!
The best time to visit Gandria is from May to September.
How to get here:
The best option is to take the scenic lake cruise from Lugano (free with Swiss Travel Pass, 9.90CHF each way with Half-fare card, 20% off with Ticino card). It takes only half and hour and it was such a relaxing and beautiful boat ride, with the the views of Lugano and the surrounding mountains and picturesque villages!
