The Castles of Bellinzona are a group of fortifications located in the Swiss town of Bellinzona, consisting of three castles named Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro. These impressive structures overlook the town and have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. With a rich history dating back to Roman times, these castles played a crucial role in protecting the region from invasions and conflicts between various powers. Today, visitors can explore these historic sites and marvel at their strategic locations and architectural significance.
You should try to factor 2 to 3 hour if you would like to visit all 3 castles. And if you want lots of historical info, you might consider a guided tour at Castelgrande.
Directions:
Castelgrande is in the old town and the easiest out of the three reach. The other two castles, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro are on the hills above Bellinzona. For these two castles, you can either walk to those castles or choose to take a shuttle tour. Many choose the shuttle because of the elevation gain.
To get to Sasso Corbaro, from Bellinzona station, take bus route 4 “Bellinzona Stazione–Artore–Cast. Sasso Corbaro”. The highest castle, Sasso Corbaro, awaits you at the terminus (PostBus stop: “Bellinzona, Cast. Sasso Corbaro”).This fortress is an excellent example of the sforzesco style of the period and offers a splendid view of the whole Bellinzona area.
Continue your trip either on foot through the vineyards or comfortably by Postbus as far as the “Bellinzona, Castello Montebello” stop. This is where the middle castle is located, along with a museum rich in historic and archaeological heritage.
