Figuring out transportation in a new country can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry—I’ve got you! Whether you’re hopping between cities, navigating London with kids in tow, or planning a countryside road trip, England is easy to get around. Here’s what you need to know so you can spend less time stressing and more time enjoying your adventure.

Trains: The Easy Way to Explore

Trains are one of the best ways to travel between cities like London, Bath, York, Oxford, and beyond. They’re fast, comfortable, and scenic (hello, countryside views!).

👶 Kid-Friendly Perks:

  • Under 5s ride free on all National Rail trains when sitting on your lap.

  • Ages 5-15 get 50% off most train fares.

  • Family & Friends Railcard = ⅓ off adult fares and up to 60% off kids' fares—worth it if you’re taking multiple train trips!

  • London’s train stations are big and busy, so arrive early if you need extra time to find your platform.

💡 Tip: Download the Trainline app to check schedules, book tickets, and avoid the long queues at ticket machines.

The London Underground: Mind the Gap (and the Kids!)

The Tube (London’s subway) is the fastest way to get across the city, and it’s surprisingly easy to use once you get the hang of it. You really don't need to rent a car or use taxis in London, as it will actually usually take longer to get places!

There are maps everywhere in the tunnels to show you the stations. You can use google maps to map your route. Just tap the bus icon in the google map app and it will tell you which tube line to take and where to get off.

👶 Kid-Friendly Perks:

  • Under 11s travel free on the Tube, buses, trams, and DLR when with a paying adult.

  • Ages 11-15 can get a Zip Oyster Card for half-price fares.

  • Strollers: Some stations have elevators, but not all—check the TfL map for “step-free” stations if you have a stroller.

  • Payment: While you can buy an Oyster card, there's really no need! Just use a contactless credit card to tap in and out, or Apple / Google Pay on your phone!

💡 Tip: The Tube gets packed during rush hour (7-9 AM & 4-6 PM), so if possible, travel outside these times for a more relaxed ride with kids.

Buses & Trams: A Scenic, Budget-Friendly Option

London’s red double-decker buses aren’t just iconic—they’re also super affordable and a great way to sightsee. You tap to pay when you get on, and get off whenever you're ready (it's the same fare).

  • Kids under 11 ride free on London buses.

  • In most other cities, kids under 5 ride free, but check local rules.

  • You can pay with a contactless card, phone, or an Oyster card (no cash accepted).

💡 Tip: Grab the front seat on the top deck for the best views!

Taxis & Ride Shares:

  • Black cabs (London’s classic taxis) can be hailed on the street or found at taxi ranks. They’re pricey but an option when you have tired kids and luggage.

  • Uber, Bolt, Skyline Taxis and FreeNow are available if you prefer booking through an app.

  • Time saver? Not always. Sometimes traffic makes your journey take longer in a cab than on the tube.

💡 Tip: Black cabs can fit strollers without folding them up, which is a lifesaver if your little one is asleep!

Renting a Car: The Best Way to See the Countryside

If you’re heading to the Cotswolds, Lake District, Cornwall, or other rural areas, renting a car gives you freedom to explore at your own pace. But before you hit the road, here’s what you need to know:

🚗 Important for Families:

  • Drive on the LEFT! (This takes some getting used to if you’re from the U.S.!)

  • Roundabouts are everywhere—yield to cars coming from the right.

  • Parking in cities can be a nightmare—look for Park & Ride options to save time and stress. You can also download the RingGo app to pay for spots.

💡 Tip: If you’re road-tripping, download Google Maps offline in case you lose signal in the countryside! It happens often

Final Thoughts

England’s transport system is super efficient, and once you get the hang of it, getting around is a breeze. Whether you’re riding the Tube, hopping on a train, or road-tripping through the countryside, I hope this guide will help you feel prepared so you can focus on what really matters—making amazing memories with your family!

Safe travels! 🚆✨
