A visit to the Katholiko Monastery on the Akrotiri Peninsula is a fascinating and adventurous half- or full-day excursion. The journey begins at the Gouverneto Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Crete, built in the 15th century. The entrance to the hiking path leading to Katholiko Monastery is located about 20 km from Chania.

The Hike to Katholiko Monastery

Begin your hike through the gardens of the Gouverneto Monastery. After a short flat section, the path becomes rocky and descends into the gorge. One must-see along the way is the Arkoudospilios Cave. This cave offers a cool escape from the blazing sun outside, but avoid drinking the water, as it is used by goats.

After exploring the cave, continue your descent toward Katholiko Monastery. From here, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Cretan Sea. Serpentine trails gently lead you down into the gorge. The descent is not particularly difficult, as the path is made of cobblestones and includes stairs, but it is fully exposed to the sun. At the bottom, you’ll reach the historic Katholiko Monastery.

After visiting the monastery, a short but rocky path leads through the gorge to Katholiko Bay. The uneven terrain makes for slow walking, but the effort is well worth it. This small fjord is truly stunning and is considered the highlight of the hike. However, as Katholiko Bay is a religious site, swimming is not permitted.

The hike back up is more challenging, with numerous steps and full exposure to the sun. Be sure to bring plenty of water. Despite the climb, the entire round-trip hike takes only 2 to 3 hours.

History of the Monastery

The monastery was built on the site where Saint John the Hermit (or Xenos) passed away in the 11th century. Following his death, the area became an important ascetic center. The cave was transformed into a temple (which celebrates on September 20), and hermits originally sought refuge here before monk cells were later added.

In the 17th century, extensive construction took place under the direction of Jeremiah Tzagarolo, following architectural plans by Sebastiano Serlio. The monastic complex took on its present-day form, featuring monk cells, a bell tower, and a striking bridge spanning the gorge’s river. Beneath the bridge, vaulted storage rooms were built, while two-story buildings and small arched rooms were added to accommodate pilgrims.

During the 17th century, the cult of Saint John became highly influential in Crete. However, due to frequent pirate attacks along the coast, the monastery was eventually abandoned. The monks relocated to the Gouverneto Monastery, at the entrance of the hiking trail.

According to legend, near the sea exit of the gorge, a large rock shaped like a ship is said to be a pirate vessel turned to stone by the curse of the abbot of Katholiko.
