The area was once covered by a lake millions of years ago, which eventually dried up, leaving behind sediments that formed the striking formations we see today.

Zabriskie Point is a stunning location in Death Valley National Park, California, known for its unique and breathtaking landscape. It was named after Christian Brevoort Zabriskie, who was the vice-president and general manager of the Pacific Coast Borax Company back in the day. The most pronounced feature viewed from Zabriskie Point is Manly Beacon. This jutting high point rises to an elevation of 823 ft (251 m), and bears the name of one of the first 49ers (gold rush pioneers) to visit the area. Manly Beacon is especially magnificent when viewed at sunrise or sunset.

A 15 minute drive east on Highway 190 from Furnace Creek Visitor Center will bring you to the parking area for this not-to-be-missed view point. From the parking lot, the point is a ¼ mile (400 m) walk up a hill on a paved trail. Those interested in hiking in the badlands can pick up the Badlands Loop Trail at the Zabriskie Point parking lot. Hiking distance varies depending on the route chosen: longer hikes can include Gower Gulch, Golden Canyon, and Red Cathedral. Hiking down into Golden Canyon Trail is a must, not to strenuous of a hike and the views and textures in the canyon are so breathtaking. I especially love it during blue hour, the colors just seem to become so vibrant and pronounced with hue.

As far as lenses go- theres no right or wrong here! Wide is great, all the way to telephoto to capture the wild textures up close as well as capturing subjects for scale.

For accommodation, if you're camping the most amazing free camp spot right outside of the park is called "The Pads" (36.33799, -116.59961) An old trailer park for a mining operation with concrete slabs and lots of space. It is situated between Death Valley Junction and Death Valley and good for park access. No cell coverage. Does not require 4x4, and the place is so big theres usually plenty of spots. This is a little higher in elevation, so when sleeping here at night it helps with the temps in the warmer months. If you need to load up on food and supplies, there is a gas station, market and a few restaurants in Furnace Creek, but be prepared as they are all VERY expensive. Make sure to load up on essentials before hand if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg on food and firewood. The Ranch at Death Valley is fairly reasonable price wise, but usually pretty popular. If you're camping and need a shower, you can pay $14 at the Ranch to use the Pool and shower facilities (this was like finding an oasis in the summer months).

When planning to travel on backroads, especially during or after rain, it's advisable to exercise caution, be prepared for changing conditions, and, if possible, choose a vehicle with suitable off-road capabilities. Always prioritize safety, and if road conditions seem questionable, consider delaying your trip or choosing alternative routes. Flooding in Death Valley is NO JOKE. If there are warnings of closed roads, do not ignore them.

Practice Leave No Trace when camping, ensuring minimal impact on the environment. Pack out all waste, stick to established trails, and leave nature as you found it, preserving the wilderness for others to enjoy.

Pets are NOT allowed on the trail, but the trail is short, and only if visiting in winter months you can leave them in your car. They are allowed in the parking lot. I do not advise visiting Death Valley in warmer months with a pet because it is VERY HOT.
