These ponds near Moab, Utah, are renowned for their striking turquoise-blue color, created by dye added to the brine to speed up evaporation in the potash harvesting process. Operated by Intrepid Potash, Inc., these industrial ponds are used to extract potassium-based fertilizer and are set against the stark beauty of the surrounding red rock desert. While the ponds themselves are on private property and swimming is strictly prohibited, they can be viewed from Potash Road (State Route 279), which offers several scenic pullouts for photos—just be sure to respect all boundaries.

The area is pet-friendly, especially along Potash Road, where leashed dogs are welcome to explore with you. The drive runs alongside the Colorado River and offers quiet, scenic stretches perfect for stopping and taking in the view—or letting your pup roam (safely) by your side.

Camping near the Potash Evaporation Ponds is both accessible and varied, with options ranging from developed campgrounds to remote, dispersed spots on BLM-managed land. William's Bottom Campground is a convenient choice right off Potash Road, featuring designated campsites, picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. For a more rugged and flexible experience, dispersed camping is allowed in surrounding BLM areas, offering free camping with minimal infrastructure for those who prefer a back-to-basics vibe. Other BLM lands in the area also allow dispersed camping with varying amenities and solitude.

Drone use near the Potash Ponds is allowed outside private property lines, but it’s essential to fly responsibly—avoid flying over roads, vehicles, or people, and always check FAA regulations. The ponds’ vibrant blue color against the desert red rock creates surreal aerial photo opportunities, especially during early morning and golden hour light.

Potash Road is generally accessible by most vehicles, and while conditions can vary depending on weather, a 4x4 is typically not required. High clearance may be helpful in certain areas if you’re planning to go beyond the main byway. If you're looking for a unique desert landscape, pet-friendly adventure, and a quiet place to camp under the stars, the Potash Ponds area is a must-visit along your Southwest route.
