A quick look at the gear we use!
Camera gear ranges hugely, as do the prices!! We are by no means professional photographers, therefore, unable to talk in length about the best types of camera, lenses and gear to use for a safari, particularly for capturing wildlife! But if you do want that 'National Geographic shot' then you will have to invest in a really exceptional camera that is suitable for wildlife photography, usually a telephoto lens!
We would recommend you having a camera of some description as they do have a much better zoom than mobile phones, which will be useful for taking wildlife photos! Very often wildlife is in the distance, not always close to your truck!
We would also recommend getting a camera with good stabilization as well!
We have been travelling with our bridge camera for the last 3 years now and honestly, for a bridge camera it really does pack a punch! It cost around £400 (US$500) which we think is very reasonable!
It has a 'longer' zoom than mirrorless and DSLR lenses which is great for trying to capture wildlife from a distance, however as it is a bridge camera the quality of the images is not as crisp and sharp as it would be if using a better camera!
You can find a full list of all the camera gear that we use in our Amazon Storefront.
All the safari photos you see on our social media pages, in this guide and on our website are all either shot with an iPhone or our bridge camera! This will help give you an idea of whether or not you think this will be adequate for your trip!
