To start your journey, take the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Utsunomiya Station. From there, you have two options:
1️⃣ Rental Car – Recommended if you want flexibility for the next three days.
2️⃣ Pickup Service – Arrange a pickup with Iizukatei for around 10,000 yen.
A Stay at Iizukatei – Immersing in Rural Japan
This itinerary revolves around staying at Iizukatei, a historic accommodation that offers a true rural Japan experience. Partly owned and run by the local government, the goal is to allow visitors to fully immerse in the culture, history, and daily life of the region.
One of the highlights of staying here is the English-speaking concierge, who can help arrange unique, local cultural activities that are hard to find elsewhere. Some experiences include:
✔️ Visiting a local farmer and sharing a meal made from fresh, local ingredients
✔️ Tatami-making workshops where you can learn traditional craftsmanship
✔️ Other activities tailored to seasonal and regional specialties
There are many activities available, but in this itinerary, I’ve only included the ones I personally took part in. Whether you’re looking for authentic rural charm, deep cultural experiences, or simply a peaceful getaway, Iizukatei is an incredible place to stay.
