In the Belgian city of Kortrijk, you find the Broel towers with the Broel bridge over the river Lys. They were built in the Middle Ages and are now a listed monument. The towers are one of the most important symbols of Kortrijk. Together with the Artillery tower, they are the only remains of the medieval city walls of the city. Although they look identical, the towers were not built at the same time. The southern tower is the oldest one and is called the ‘Speyetoren’ or ‘Blue tower’. It was built in 1385 to control the traffic on the river. The northern tower was built in 1415 and is called the ‘Ingelborgtoren’ or ‘Armorietorre’ as it has served as an armory in the past.
