Mount Asahidake, standing at 2,291 meters, is Hokkaido's highest peak and a gateway to the natural beauty of Daisetsuzan National Park. The Asahidake Ropeway offers a convenient ascent, providing access to various hiking trails that cater to different skill levels.

This is great for a day trip or you could use this as the starting point for a multi day hike. A few years back I hiked the trail for 5 days ending up just past Furano. There are a few exit points that might be more suitable for your itinerary - depending on how much time you have for your trip.

Hiking Options:

  1. Sugatami Pond Loop:

    • Difficulty: Easy

    • Duration: Approximately 1 hour

    • Description: Starting from the Sugatami Station at the top of the ropeway, this gentle trail circles the picturesque Sugatami Pond. Along the way, hikers can enjoy views of active fumaroles and alpine flora.

  2. Asahidake Summit Trail:

    • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

    • Duration: 4 to 6 hours round-trip

    • Description: This trail leads from Sugatami Station to the summit of Mount Asahidake. The path is steep and traverses volcanic terrain, offering panoramic views of the national park. Hikers should be prepared for sudden weather changes and ensure they have appropriate gear.

  3. Nakadake Onsen Loop:

    • Difficulty: Challenging

    • Duration: 7 to 8 hours round-trip

    • Description: For experienced hikers, this loop extends beyond the Asahidake summit to Nakadake Onsen, a natural hot spring. The trail offers diverse landscapes, including volcanic craters and alpine meadows. Due to its length and difficulty, it's recommended for well-prepared hikers.

Special Tips:

  • Seasonal Considerations: The hiking season typically runs from late June to early October. Outside this period, snow can make trails hazardous. Always check current trail conditions before your hike.

  • Weather Preparedness: Mount Asahidake's weather is unpredictable. Carry layers to adjust to changing conditions, and be prepared for sudden temperature drops.

  • Trail Etiquette: Stay on designated paths to protect the fragile alpine environment and ensure your safety.

Access from Sapporo:

  1. By Train and Bus:

    • Train: From Sapporo Station, take the JR Limited Express to Asahikawa Station (approximately 1.5 hours).

    • Bus: From Asahikawa Station, board the bus to Asahidake Onsen, where the ropeway is located (approximately 1 hour).

  2. By Car:

    • Drive from Sapporo to Asahidake Onsen via the Hokkaido Expressway and Route 1160. The journey takes about 3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions
