This former fishing and cannery village features brightly painted heritage buildings on stilts, connected by a wooden boardwalk.

Today, Telegraph Cove has only 20 year-round residents. In the warmer months, however, it transforms into a busy eco-tourist resort (parking can be tricky!)

Johnstone Strait is home to one of the largest resident orca pods in the world. For that reason, Telegraph Cove is a popular departure point for whale-watching tours and guided kayak adventures (both day trips and multi-day).

Complete the experience with a visit to the Whale Interpretive Centre, where you can view skeletons of various local species and learn about the nearby Michael Bigg Robson Bight Ecological Reserve.

***January 2025 update - part of Telegraph Cove was destroyed by fire on 31st December 2024. Some tour operators (North Island Kayak and Prince of Whales) have confirmed they will be operating in summer 2025. The Whale Interpretive Centre was burned down and a fundraiser is ongoing**
