Georgioupoli is a popular seaside town located 38 km east of Chania and 21 km west of Rethymnon.

This small coastal town is nestled in a lush valley rich with rivers and natural springs. While tourism is the primary industry, many locals are also involved in beekeeping and agriculture. The Almiros River runs through the town, and just before reaching it, you’ll find the Almiros marsh—a vital habitat for various important animal species.

One of the village’s most distinctive landmarks is the main road and square, lined with towering eucalyptus and cypress trees. The square itself is a lively hub, filled with restaurants, cafés, and tourist shops. At the river’s exit, you’ll come across the town’s charming harbor. However, the true highlight of Georgioupoli is the picturesque Chapel of Saint Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos), perched at the end of a small pier. From a distance, the chapel appears as though it is floating on the sea’s surface.

The history of Georgioupoli dates back to at least the Minoan period. A Minoan tomb was discovered on Kastelos Hill, and the town itself stands on the ancient site of Amfimalla, which once served as the port city for Lappa (modern-day Argiroupoli). Archaeological excavations have uncovered several devotional artifacts from this time.

During the Byzantine era, Saint John Xenos founded the Monastery of Saint George in nearby Dramia. In the Venetian period, the region’s fertile land made it a valuable asset for the occupiers, who built a fort. The fortress was later destroyed by the Ottomans, who constructed a new one using its remains. Today, only ruins of the fort remain.

In the 19th century, much of the marshland was drained to make way for new agricultural land, attracting many new settlers. This led to the formation of a sizable community originally called Almyroupoli (meaning "Almiros town," named after the river). However, the name was soon changed to Georgioupolis in honor of Prince George, who played a significant role in uniting Crete with Greece.
