Lake Kournas is the only freshwater lake in Crete, nestled in a stunning location between the western slopes of the White Mountains and the fertile plain of Georgioupolis. Though small in size—measuring about 1,087 meters in length and 880 meters in width—this picturesque lake holds great historical and natural significance. Known as Koresia in ancient times, the area is thought to have housed a temple dedicated to Athena. Its current name likely comes from the Arabic word for lake, or it could be derived from the Greek term krounos meaning spring.

What to see and do

Lake Kournas is an excellent spot for a leisurely walk or a day trip, it offers a serene landscape that appeals to nature lovers. The lake is fed by two springs, one of which, Mati, becomes visible only during the summer months when the water level drops. The lake itself is formed by groundwater from the White Mountains being trapped by porous rocks and the natural bowl shape on the southeastern side.

In terms of biodiversity, Lake Kournas is an important ecological site, home to rare plant and animal species. It is part of the Natura 2000 Network, which protects natural habitats across Europe. The lake's lush vegetation supports various species, including eels, silversides, freshwater blennies, and even goldfish. The area is also known for its reptiles, such as a rare two-colored turtle with spots on its shell. Additionally, the lake serves as a crucial stopover for migratory birds, with over 130 species, including coots, ducks, herons, and cormorants, frequenting the area. The dark appearance of the water is due to the seaweed found at the bottom of the lake.

Both locals and tourists flock to Lake Kournas, particularly in summer, when the receding waters reveal small sandy beaches. You can enjoy a relaxing day by the water, with cafés and taverns nearby offering traditional Cretan cuisine and beautiful views. Besides swimming, pedal boats are available for rent, with the late afternoon being the best time to experience the lake's magical hues.

Myths and legends

Lake Kournas is also steeped in myths and legends. One popular tale tells of a young woman who, after being pursued by her father, wished for the earth to open up and swallow her. Her wish was granted, and a lake formed in her place, transforming her into a fairy. Some locals claim to see her sitting on a rock in the middle of the lake. Another legend speaks of a village that led sinful lives, prompting God to send a great flood that created the lake, leaving only the priest’s daughter alive. She is said to be seen combing her hair on a rock by moonlight. Additionally, an old myth suggests that the lake has no bottom, though it actually has a depth of 22.5 meters. There are also theories about electromagnetic fields in the area, which some people claim to feel when near the lake's shores.
