Marathi is situated 17 km east of Chania and 5 km east of the Creta Naval Base in Souda Bay, along the southeastern coast of Akrotiri. It is well-known in the Chania region, attracting many people each summer, primarily families and older travelers.

The area features two stunning beaches with fine sand and shallow, tranquil waters, making them perfect for children. These beaches are well sheltered from the winds, as they face south and offer a beautiful view of Drapanos Cape and the White Mountains. A small pier separates the two beaches, doubling as a harbor for fishing boats and small ferries. The beaches are well-equipped with all necessary amenities nearby.

Approximately 500 meters across from Marathi lies the small island of Marathi, also known as Palia Souda (Paleosouda), which can be reached by swimming. The island features a small pine forest, while its western coast is steep and popular among scuba divers.

Furthermore, if you follow the road north, you will come across the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Minoa along the coastal route. This town is believed to have been a seaport for Aptera. The archaeological site, sometimes referred to as the Small Palace of Minos (despite not dating back to Minoan times), contains remnants of buildings and baths, likely linked to an ancient harbor, military facilities, and a mansion. A semicircular wall is still visible on the beach.

Continuing northwest, after passing a section of the beach where ducks are often seen roaming, the road leads to the church of St. Spyridon—a picturesque seaside location often chosen for weddings and christening ceremonies.

Alternatively, heading southwest from the port, you will reach the far end of the harbor beach, where the shoreline consists of large pebbles. This area, known as Sosorides, is a favorite among locals seeking a quiet, peaceful spot away from the crowds. Sosorides can be accessed via a paved road that begins a few meters before reaching Marathi from Chania.

There are a few tavernas available, and you can park either at the harbor or further up in the parking lot of one of the tavernas.
