Massive saline lake in Africa

Message from Chloe Keleny

Lake Turkana, also known as the Jade Sea, is a massive saline lake located in the Kenyan Rift Valley, stretching into Ethiopia. It's the world's largest permanent desert lake and the fourth-largest salt lake globally. Despite its stunning turquoise color from algae, it's not the best spot for a refreshing swim due to its high levels of fluoride and salinity. The area around the lake is home to diverse wildlife, including Nile crocodiles and unique fish species. Plus, it's a hotspot for hominid fossils! But watch out for those sudden storms – they can be wild!
