This is a very unique and fun way to spice up your next hike in Indian Lake NY.

You can only get here by water, so rent a boat or kayak (or launch your own) from Indian Lake Marina and make your way across the lake to reach the trailhead. A single kayak rental costs roughly $100 for the day, but you can save some money by splitting the price of a double kayak with someone else.

The trailhead is located in a cove almost directly across the lake from the marina. The people at the marina can point it out for you and then you just have to paddle in that general direction until you find it. I do recommend having the trailhead pinned on offline AllTrails maps though because it's kind of easy to miss.

When you find the trailhead, pull your kayak ashore and start your hike! The hike itself is less than a mile. The trail gradually climbs, but overall it's pretty easy, well marked and easy to follow. From the top, you'll get sweeping views of the lake and you might even have it to yourself!

NOTES:

• Start early. It takes roughly 40 minutes to paddle across the lake to the trailhead, about an hour-ish to hike with time to take in the views, and another 40 minutes to paddle back (assuming low wind)

• Keep an eye on the weather. If the wind picks up, then paddling across the lake becomes a very tough workout. I recommend checking the wind forecast and renting a double kayak to make it easier to get back if you're not a strong paddler.

• Bring a dry bag for your electronics - you will get wet!

• Pack food, enough water, a wind breaker for the paddle over, and sun protection.

• If you start early enough, there are day use sites on the islands near the trailhead. Pack some food and spend a few hours soaking in the views. Just remember to Leave No Trace and pack out all of your trash!
