Nope, this isn't a cenote. This is Upstate NY.
Check out this short hike that leads to a crystal clear turquoise swimming hole in the forest. Located in Sundown Wild Forest in the Catskill Mountains, Peak-a-moose Blue Hole is the perfect spot to cool off on a hot day.
In 2021, the DEC instituted a permit system for the Blue Hole as it was becoming too crowded and overrun with trash
**A permit is required seven days a week from May 15th - Sept. 15. You can get a permit here up to 7 days in advance: https://www.dec.ny.gov/press/123002.html
**
To get there, park at the first official park sign after the one for Buttermilk Falls, Peekamoose Area. Then, cross the road and walk in the direction of Buttermilk Falls. There, you'll see a little path leading down to the water. The walk from the parking area to the trailhead is only a couple of minutes, so keep your eye out for the trail as it is a little hard to see.
The trail is short and easy, but a little bit steep. People routinely swim here, so you likely won't have it to yourself unless you show up very early or late in the day.
There are no facilities here.
Note that the Peakamoose Blue Hole is currently in danger of being shut down due to the amount of trash people were leaving behind.
If you decide to visit, please don’t litter, leave toilet paper, or turn this into a “party” locations.
Please follow the principles of Leave No Trace and respect the natural environment. It is also always a good idea to bring a trash bag along to pick up any little you find, so that we can keep these beautiful places pristine and enjoyable for years to come.
