Kwasitchewan Falls trail - What to know
The Kwasitchewan Falls Trail is a challenging 22+ km trek through dense forest leading to Manitoba’s tallest waterfall. This hike is best suited for experienced hikers and is ideally done over two days.
Hiking to Kwasitchewan Falls, is an incredible adventure—but it requires proper preparation! We attempted to complete this trail in a single day—a choice we wouldn’t recommend—and unfortunately, we got lost just 1 km from Kwasitchewan Falls, forcing us to turn back. That was a tough defeat!
Based on the mistakes from our experience, here are some essential tips to ensure a successful hike:
✅ Tip: Cell service is unreliable, so download offline maps from apps like AllTrails, Gaia GPS, or Maps.me before starting the hike. Mark key waypoints, including the trailhead and the falls.
✅ Tip: Avoid strenuous hikes the day before to conserve energy. Do some light stretching and fuel up with a good meal before setting out.
✅ Tip: The trail can be muddy and slippery, so wear waterproof hiking boots with good grip instead of runners or casual shoes. Gaiters are also helpful if conditions are wet.
✅ Tip: Aim to start by 6 AM to allow plenty of daylight for the return trip. This is especially important in Spring and fall when daylight hours are shorter. We started at 11 AM in the Spring which was not the best move. We ended up back in the parking lot around 11:35 PM.
✅ Tip: While the Grass River route is considered shorter, it still feels long. The Phillips Lake route is another option but requires extra endurance. Pick the route that best suits your fitness level.
✅ Tip: Carry bear spray and know how to use it. Hike in groups, make noise, and stay aware of surroundings to avoid surprising wildlife like bears and wolves.
