This trail begins in Machico, near the old tunnel that connects Machico with Caniçal. It eventually leads hikers to Porto da Cruz, following a path that the local people have long used to travel between these two places.
At the start of the trail, you'll walk along the levada, which offers fantastic views of Machico. To your right, you'll find a staircase that leads to Boca do Risco, climbing up these stairs will offer a panoramic view of the island's north coast at the top. Take your time to appreciate the beautiful surroundings.
The path becomes more challenging as you head toward Porto da Cruz. It follows the mountain ridge, with the vast Atlantic Ocean below. It’s a narrow path without railings, so it's best suited for experienced hikers without a fear of heights.
As you continue, make sure to enjoy the views and the natural beauty along the route. Once you arrive in Porto da Cruz, you can take some time to relax and explore this unique part of the island, known for its distinctive cultures and traditions.
This route is too long to walk both ways, so I recommend taking a taxi back from Porto da Cruz or find another means of transportation back.
