The Rocky Mountain Summit Track in Wanaka, New Zealand is a great alternative option to the more famous Roys Peak and offers a different view over Lake Wanaka with a less challenging hike.

This trail takes you through a diverse landscape of tussock alpine meadows, low lying forest and rocky peaks, offering breathtaking views of Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps.

The Rocky Mountain Hike is a moderately challenging day hike that takes you to an elevation of approximately 775 meters (2,543 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located just a short drive from Wanaka's town center, making it an accessible adventure for hikers of various skill levels.

Just before reaching the summit, the path narrows and you feel like you're atop the world as the jaw-dropping expanse sprawls before you. There are several detours on route, including a trip to the Diamond Lake Lookout, Lake Wanaka Lookout and another unofficial viewpoint, with benches to sit and enjoy the views. If it's wet, take care descending as slippery rocks and mud can be hazardous.

Plan for 3-4 hours, depending on your pace and the time spent at viewpoints and photography.

The Rocky Mountain Hike can be enjoyed year-round, but it's most popular during the spring and summer months (November to March) when the weather is pleasant.
